Near-optimum decoding of product codes: block turbo codes
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes an iterative decoding algorithm for any product code built using linear block codes. It is based on soft-input/soft-output decoders for decoding the component codes so that near-optimum performance is obtained at each iteration. This soft-input/soft-output decoder is a Chase decoder which delivers soft outputs instead of binary decisions. The soft output of the decoder is an estimation of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) of the binary decisions given by the Chase decoder. The theoretical justifications of this algorithm are developed and the method used for computing the soft output is fully described. The iterative decoding of product codes is also known as block turbo code (BTC) because the concept is quite similar to turbo codes based on iterative decoding of concatenated recursive convolutional codes. The performance of different Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH)–BTC’s are given for the Gaussian and the Rayleigh channel. Performance on the Gaussian channel indicates that data transmission at 0.8 dB of Shannon’s limit or more than 98% (R=C > 0.98) of channel capacity can be achieved with high-coderate BTC using only four iterations. For the Rayleigh channel, the slope of the bit-error rate (BER) curve is as steep as for the Gaussian channel without using channel state information.

Turbo Product Codes for Optical Communications
With the increasing demand for high-speed communications systems, forward error correction (FEC) codes and signal processing techniques receive much attention. FEC is a mathematical method for introducing redundancy in a data stream or data block to protect information symbols against potential errors during transmission through a communications channel. A major breakthrough in FEC was achieved...
متن کاملIterative Least-Squares Decoding of Analog Product Codes
We define analog product codes as a special case of analog parallel concatenated codes. These codes serve as a tool to get some more insight into the convergence of “Turbo” decoding. We prove that the iterative “Turbo”-like decoding of analog product codes indeed is an estimation in the least-squares sense and thus correspond to the optimum maximum-likelihood decoding.
متن کاملAchieving a near-optimum erasure correction performance with low-complexity LDPC codes
SUMMARY Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are shown to tightly approach the performance of idealized maximum distance separable (MDS) codes over memoryless erasure channels, under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding. This is possible down to low error rates and even for small and moderate block sizes. The decoding complexity of ML decoding is kept low thanks to a class of decoding algorithms, ...
متن کاملFull-parallel architecture for turbo decoding of product codes
A full-parallel architecture for turbo decoding, which achieves ultrahigh data rates when using product codes as error correcting codes, is proposed. This architecture is able to decode product codes using binary BCH or m-ary Reed-Solomon component codes. The major advantage of our architecture is that it enables the memory blocks between all half-iterations to be removed. Moreover, the latency...
متن کاملIterative Decoding of Product Code
Product codes based on binary block codes are considered. The aim is to use simple block codes as component codes in the constructions. Then, by using interleaving, large codes can be obtained. The fundamental aim of the interleaving is to obtain codes with a structure that is suitable for iterative decoding. We present interleaving strategies for iterative (turbo) decoding of block codes. A si...
